Case Competitions

Want to get credits hours for doing case competitions? Take BCOM 4481 this Fall

Are you interested in taking part in case competitions? The BComm Case Competition course (BCOM 4481) offers hands-on skill development preparing you for case competitions across Canada and globally.

Not sure if you have space in your degree to take this course? Special one-time exceptions will be allowed for this course to count towards Arts/Science electives in the BComm degree if you don't have any other room in your degree.

Examples of case competitions you can participate in:

  • Accounting Leadership Session Case Competition - CPA Nova Scotia (Wolfville, NS)
  • International Business Ethics and Sustainability Case Competition (Los Angeles, California, USA)
  • John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition (Montreal, QC)
  • Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (Kingston, ON)

There is no additional cost to represent the Sobey School in these case competitions. All costs will be covered by the Sobey School of Business.

About the course (from the instructor, Jeff Muton):

The course is experiential in nature, so the focus is learning by doing, not me lecturing. Each week the students read, analyze and present their analysis of an actual business case – based on a best practice approach that I share. You will learn critical thinking and presentation skills, which are invaluable in the workplace. There are individual written assignments, but the rest of the work is done in teams. I find students really enjoy the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout their studies by analyzing real life business situations. Enclosed is the course outline from this past year for more details. While not part of the course stronger students are also invited to represent SMU at local and national business case competitions within Atlantic and beyond. In addition, competing at case competitions are excellent addition to your resume.
